Have straight goals before each rotation and try to learn from every possible scenario

Scuba diving and woodworking

What do you like about Ottawa as a city?
The outdoor activities: climbing, skiing, golfing, water-sports

Why did you pick general surgery?
For the work-life balance and flexible hours.

What is the best thing about this program?
The people. So grateful to be surrounded by such a friendly, inclusive, and talented group of co-residents and staff.

What do you wish someone had told you before you started general surgery residency?
Try not to sweat the little things. And that it is possible to max out your line of credit.

How do you stay in touch with your love ones?
I call my grandmother everyday in the car on my way home from work.

What do you like about Ottawa as a city?
Big enough to have a Nordstrom, small enough to not always have to pay for street parking.

University of Calgary

Any advice for CaRMS applicants this year?
Be yourself and not who you think others want you to be.

Why did you pick general surgery?
For the breadth of skills that can be acquired, in and out of the operating room.

What is the best thing about this program?
The collegiality.

What is your favorite surgery?
Right inguinal hernia repair.

What do you do outside of work?
Cook, exercise, play basketball, and think really hard about opening my textbook.

How do you stay in touch with your love ones?
Microsoft Teams.

What is the best thing about this program?
Everyone has your back. Someone will always cover that call shift; staff call to check in on you; and the entire program goes nuts when someone does their first skin-to-skin appy. It’s incredible!

What is your best trick to be successful in residency?
Surround yourself with people who you admire and inspire you. Invest in their success and you won’t regret it. Also, find a partner who has an endless capacity for patience and forgiveness.

What do you do outside of work?
I spend as much time as possible in the kitchen. Climbing, cycling, volleyball, DIY projects. Irresponsible spending for restaurants and musicals.

How do you stay in touch with your love ones?
Phone calls while driving go a long way and games nights with my brothers.
