 Application Overview

Our primary goal with this program is to select applicants who have the potential to grow into outstanding surgeons within our training environment. We are looking for individuals who are committed to self-improvement and willing to step outside their comfort zones in pursuit of excellence.

We value hard-working, compassionate, dedicated, and passionate individuals. Our program operates like a family, and we seek applicants who will integrate well into this dynamic—those who will contribute positively to our culture and collaborate effectively in a team-based setting.

We are particularly interested in well-rounded individuals with demonstrated interests beyond surgery, who embody our core values: integrity, accountability, and initiative. Our mission is to train the best general surgeons in Canada—professionals who will deliver exceptional patient care and contribute meaningfully to the advancement of the field.

Residency Positions

We offer 7 residency positions each year:

  • Canadian Medical Graduates – 4 positions

  • Canadian Medical Graduates, Bilingual Stream – 1 position

  • International Medical Graduates – 1 position

  • Foreign Medical Graduates – 1 position

Selection Process

We use a combination of file review and interviews to gather information and make our ranking decisions. To ensure fairness and objectivity, we employ a standardized scoring rubric during file reviews, and all files are anonymized to reduce bias.

Interview Format

Our interview process follows the Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) format, conducted by a mix of senior residents and faculty members. We adopted this format several years ago, as we believe it promotes a more objective assessment of candidates.

Each MMI station is designed to evaluate traits we believe are critical to success in our program. A unique scoring sheet is used for each station based on its specific goals.

This year, each applicant will participate in seven MMI stations, along with one break station. The interviews will be conducted via Zoom breakout rooms. More information will be provided in the coming weeks.
