CARMS Profile - Dr. Amarvir Singh Bilkhu
Where did you train?
I trained at the University of Cambridge, UK, and did my residency training in Yorkshire & the Humber School of Surgery.
What do you like about general surgery?
My favourite aspect about surgery is the thinking that goes into surgical decision-making and operative strategy, and going on to communicate this to patients with the best rapport possible.
What is your sub-specialty?
Colorectal Surgery
What is your research interest?
I am interested in applied clinical research with colorectal surgery and colorectal surgery clinical outcomes, particularly in colorectal oncology. I also have a passion for Medical Leadership.
What do you like about our program?
I enjoy the friendly, collaborative and supportive culture within The Ottawa Hospital.
What is your hope for this program?
I hope to collaborate with the excellent surgical faculty to offer high quality clinical care to patients and develop the service such as the robotic surgery program. In the future I hope to take on more leadership roles in medical education to contribute towards the TOH tradition of delivering first class training in colorectal and general surgery.
What do you like about training residents?
I have always had a passion for personal and professional development and still remember being a resident myself and experiencing the excitement of learning and performing surgery under the wing of trainers and mentors, who I will always remember as pivotal in shaping my career. Having a deep appreciation of this experience means I want to continue that tradition and train the future generations.
What is your favourite thing to teach?
My favourite thing to teach is surgical decision-making and facilitating the thought that goes into clinical and operative strategy, as well as the technical skills that all go hand-in-hand in shaping exemplary surgeons.
What is the thing you're most proud of in your professional life?
I am proud of my passion for lifelong personal and professional development, my commitment to the craft of general and colorectal surgery and a dedication to being a kind and approachable doctor to my patients and peer to my colleagues.
What do you do outside of work?
Outside of the work, I am a husband to a wonderful supportive wife and a father to two mad boys. I enjoy a range of hobbies, but particularly my interests are Buddhism, running and photography.
Tell us something people should know about you.
I believe in compassion and kindness towards all people and I have an eccentric sense of humor, even for a British person.
